Cancer isn't a metaphor for self destruction, it's quite the opposite! Cancer cells have lost their ability to self destruct and replicate uncontrollably while healthy cells in fact do naturally self-destruct after they fulfil their purpose (apoptosis). It is also hinted at in the movie as far as I can remember, that it is natural for people too to self-destruct.

The water is what your body is made of and the atmosphere of the earth….we are in the shimmer….the alien is the opposite of your body….why can’t you people not understand a simple movie?. The cell replication is you when you’re born and all of this reality is just you mirroring your own thoughts and forming copies of things

In a bed scene of Lena and Kane , Lena said “God make a mistake , bcuz our DNA were designed to be aging and not perfect” .. well , another lesson , humans love to complaints , but can’t accept the changes or even make the changes .

The expedition are intruders into the shimmer Cell. Like a virus they must be eliminated by decoding their DNA and making an immune response and antibodies. This is definitely the same life as on the Earth, but its different representation from the Universe.

I think the metaphor of Annihilation is reflective of how A.I. and cell phones and computers are becoming an extension of our nervous systems. There were so many comments about our DNA being melded with the power of the shimmer.

Everything doesn't have to be a metaphor in a movie.

The movie is just an illusion actually it is about cancer the thing that fell in to the tower does not sounded or did not affect anything which means it is cancer inside human which kills us means self destruction

I thought the movie was a poor substitute for the actual novel. As such, I found the movie to be horrible.

This movie was the dumbest thing I have ever seen.

Imagine a sequel type of this story in Africa or Siberia, where locals in the area see the shimmer and explore into it, but discover something different than the high tech western type investigation. Maybe the story could go deeper with people from different places, and times in history. That would be cool, like the visitor fungi comes every century or millennia.

When you realize that Annihilation and Frozen are the same story, both based on The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson.

An alien probe that was sent to gather info, or an "invasion of the body snatcher" type of event, but the aliens were not compatible w/humans.

if its an alien invasion its the alien invasion we would want to have coz it the lamest most inefficient alian invasion of all time. imagine taking 3 years 2 produce 2 human like aliens itll take them at least 100 years to conquer earth lol

the shimmer seemed more like a natural force of nature, rather than sentient, like the dr describes at the end that it may not even have a want or desire, it seems more like it just is, terrifying as it is beautiful, like an angel

See the film but then read the books (3 in the trilogy – Book 1 – Annihilation, Book 2 – Authority, Book 3 – Acceptance. Also known as the Southern Reach Trilogy). The film is good, but the books are way better and if you read the books first, the film may be a disappointment to you.

The Cass/bear is absolutely hands down an extremely awesome use of imagination. not only being horrifying the mixture of sounds coming out of it have crept into my mind and surface at the strangest times. it is just wrong on many levels!!!

Reminds me of the aliens from Prey. They were not evil, their aggression was not the result of hostility. The game clearly states that they don't have mirror neurons. It means they have no empathy. They don't see anything wrong with what they're doing. They just multiply by taking over other species.

The scene with the clone is practically non-aggressive. The only blow comes in self-defense.

This was 5 years ago... and I'm just now watching it on Netflix... and while I knew the bear scene from a while back I am still like "Huuuuh" that this is 5+ years old...
