On June 2, 1963, 5 science majors from Portland, Oregon, Edward Elrod age 26, Harold Whitlock age 27, Roger Caddel age 25, Bonnie Katz age 26 and Sylvia Hart age 27 who were also close friends set off from Pilot Station, Alaska.

They were scheduled to be gone for 2 weeks give or take once they made it to Pilot Station as they planned on floating the Yukon River all the way to the Bering Sea. 3 weeks later they never showed up at their final destination, so a search party was launched.

Their camp was found near the mouth of the Aproka Pass. A thorough search was made of the area and what they found not only baffled the rescuers but haunted them for years.

Among the items they found were a camera and a notebook detailing their journey and what happened up until the last survivor. The notebook belonged to Roger who was believed to be the last survivor.
