This is a Motormouth couple car video covering the most and least reliable models for each car brand according to Consumer Reports.
Consumer Reports: which brands make the most reliable vehicles? While these types of surveys can guide you, it’s important to drill down
a little more on the vehicle you want. A brand may get a good reliability rating but you may find one or more of its models do not.
Consumer Reports’ brand level rankings are based on the average predicted reliability score of the models in each brand’s lineup. There must be sufficient data for at least two models to rank each brand so some didn’t make it like Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Porsche etc.
For each brand, Consumer Reports lists every model which it has data for so you can dig deep into this survey. This year Consumer Reports gathered data on more than 300,000 vehicles from 2000 to 2024 model years with a few 2025 models that were introduced early enough to be included. It focused on 20 trouble areas that range from nuisances to major issues such as potential expensive problems involving out of warranty engines, transmission, EV batteries and EV charging. Consumer Reports asks its members about problems they had with their vehicle in the last 12 months.
This year’s survey results have more data on hybrids and electric vehicles than ever before. The data has revealed how never technology teething pains start to dissipate after two or three years. So it may be better to wait a few years before buying a new model.
Top Brand
Subaru tops the list for most reliable brand. Of Subaru’s seven models in the survey, two had well above average reliability scores, the Forester and Impreza. Crosstrek, Legacy, Outback and Ascent rate above average. One of the reasons is because Subaru models share many reliable components. When Subaru redesigns or refreshes a vehicle, those dependable systems are used which reduces the risk of new problems.
Consumer Reports says, Toyota is a good example of this introducing new powertrains, the below average reliability ratings for the Tacoma and Tundra as well as the bZ4X. Subaru’s Solterra also got below average reliability scores.
Lexus/Toyota
Lexus and Toyota have the second and third highest brand reliability scores. Four Lexus models scored above average and three came in average. Toyota has four models that scored well above average, 7 that scored above average and 5 that scored average.
The most reliable Lexus model is the NX gas or hybrid, the least reliable is the RX gas model.
For Toyota, number one is the RAV4 gas model with the hybrid and PHEV at the top as well, least reliable is Tacoma.
Honda/Acura
Honda and Acura take 4th and 5th spots, Mazda 6th, Audi 7th, BMW 8th, Kia 9th and Hyundai 10th.
Most reliable Honda is the HR-V, least reliable Accord Hybrid.
Most reliable Acura is the RDX, least reliable MDX however CR just did two Acura models.

When it comes to trouble areas, gas engines can have 17 potential trouble areas,
EVs up to 12 trouble areas like the electric motor, battery and charging systems, Hybrids 19 trouble areas, 17 from ICE vehicles as well as problems with the electric motor and EV batteries. PHEVs can experience 20 trouble areas, 17 from ICE vehicles as well as those related to the electric motors, EV batteries and EV charging.
However, hybrids remain the most reliable of the electrified segment but EVs and PHEVs are improving. Not all hybrids are the same though with Lexus, Toyota, Hyundai and Kia hybrids getting top scores. In comparison Ford’s F-150 hybrid is the least reliable in the survey. Consumer Reports says, compared to gas powertrains, PHEVs have 70% more problems and EVs 42% more issues.
When it comes to reliability 8 out of the 10 most reliable brands are Asian brands, European automakers are in second, domestic brands trail but Buick is ranked the highest amongst those domestic brands. There are some vehicles that have improved a lot and are now on recommended list, the Ford Bronco Sport, Ford Explorer and Genesis GV80.
