Arguments about human nature and therefore, the proper role of government are as old as both human nature and government. The debate is as old as human nature and government themselves and is incredibly well-illustrated by the contrast between two of the most important Founding Fathers of the United States: Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.

Jefferson had a vision of liberty but couldn’t live with its contradictions. Hamilton had no illusions — and built a system that, for better or worse, worked.
