Since you do so well at breaking down music theory in pop composition, I’d love to hear your explanation of what is going through your brain during improv. What parts are on autopilot and what are you thinking about as you play. Does your brain say “flourish the melody up at this point and your hands automatically find the notes in key? Do you “feel” each note?

Actually, the 2-5-1 progression is the backbone of just about every pop tune of what has been referred to as the classic American songbook from the beginning of the 20th. century.
ОтветитьI noticed how a good number of pop songs simply loop a 2-5-1 chord progression throughout the whole song, and I always wondered why. This actually explains a lot, as well as why it's so common in jazz songs.

ОтветитьHey! Can anyone tell me if there is a system in how David jumps from one key to another in the improv at the end? Like are there certain key changes that sound better or more natural and is he doing these „nice“ key changes or is he just wildly jumping around the circle?

ОтветитьWow, this is the first video ever to actually explain wth this annoying ii-V-I is mentioned everywhere while I couldn't figure out why. As a chord progression for a song it is quite boring but in the context of Jazz and Key changes, it is highly useful and I now understand why every musician always talks about it!!!

ОтветитьThe above illustration is a good example of why to be wary of fake books. The C# diminished under the C in the first measure is certainly not in the original and a horrible clash unless you get off the C as quickly as possible making it only a quarter note. In the second measure the D# diminished works with the C but not with the F. Better to use Richard Rodger's original chords.
