Roots of Glow in the dark petunias in the aeroponic tower garden - GROWING LIKE THEY OWN THE JOINT

The roots of these plants grow like they are in search of something. They grow vertically, horizontally and diagonally, it is really really wild. They are very active roots, unlike any other plant we've seen.

Could it be because these Petinias are part plant and part fungi?

Why else could it be?
