Jean Carrington Cook (1926-2001) was a pianist from Virginia. She was born in Richmond and later lived in Northern Virginia. She played with a number of regional orchestras in the Mid-Atlantic, as well as overseas.
Mrs. Cook plays a variety of pieces in this collection from one of her several LPs. She plays in a genteel, relaxed, and romantic style that feels intimate and personal. While maybe not what would be demanded from the concert stage, it feels right for listening at home.
In this collection I found that the Debussy piece to be my favorite. The impressionistic composition is a good match for her style. There is also an interesting piece by Alexander Lipsky, to whom the album was dedicated. Lipsky was a well known instructor of piano who worked with Mrs. Cook.
The Schumann Carnaval is actually the A side of the record. I have flipped the order for this video..
The recording has some surface noise from the LP, which I have not removed as it was not really possible without negatively impacting the sound quality of her playing. Hopefully it's not too distracting.
Markers for this the beginning of pieces are as follows:
Scarlatti - Sonata in D minor: 0:00
Scarlatti -Sonata in A major 1:35
Schubert -Impromptu in B♭ major: 4:31
Debussy - Reflets dans l'eau: 11:48
Granados - La Maja y el Ruiseñor: 17:50
Lipsky - Four Sketches for Piano: 23:00
Schumann - Carnaval: 27:30
