Sounds like braided line problems, not spinning reel problems. Maybe don’t be a Billy Braid Badass if you can’t run the line. Mono Forever

Visibility and Abrasion is an easy to solve task, I use always 2-3 meters of FC line as hooklink, than I have my mainline.

Being a new, naïve, and overly excitable new member to the coarse fisbing hobby, I invested in a decent spinning rod, nice smooth reel, and was talked into buying a 20lbs poly line.... The line was the worst decision I could've made. Despite reeling the spool properly and carefully, with plenty of spool left, every tine I went to cqst, the line would tangle around the reel, my small float bait didn't have enough mass to cause tension or pool the reel off the line... it was a 7hr disaster and learning curve which led to me quite literally stalk fishing for surface-feeding 10lbs carp without even using my reel.....

I took a few days, studyi g hard and talking go friends within the hobby, and quickly learnt my lesson.... I invested in some thin, yet strong 8lbs poly line, so much more lightweight and easy to tie knots with. I went back to the same lake and was able to fish with no problems atall wjth all the same set-up, but just lighter line!!!

No more issues with my spool/reel, and casting is so much easier as a result!!

I hope this helps for anyone reading.😊

I use braid, but not that soft braid line thats a sort of pretend to be braided line.

I use Power pro braid 20lbs test on pretty much everything. I used to use spiderwire 20lbs test braid but i was using some soft feel line that was not really braided that much. Its hard to explain but yeah.

Now that i have the good braided line i see a day/night difference on my reels especially on my baitcasters. That completely braided line is much more solid and consistent, it doesn't get frayed from reeling it in a bunch of times it stays braided. Which i never thought braid could fray but the wrong type of braid will fray. Be careful ya'll

Man, all the fishing I have does with spinning reels, I have never had an issue with just cranking the reel to close the bail. My father also who fished with spinning reels, i don't recall him ever having an issue. What I was taught was to keep tension on the line. As the reel does not have any tension until the bail closes, manually closing or cranking to close both work so long as you are aware of the tension on the line before you really start bringing the line in.

I think that it's not about a preference, it's about the enviroment you're surrounded with. I can't even think about using fluo as all the lakes I'm fishing on are full of fallen trees and other obstacles. It doesn't matter if I'm catching pikes or perches, I always use very strong braid (25kg) because I simply hate loosing expensive lures 😂

Am I wrong for running 8lb seagar as my main line and 4lb as my leader?
My grandpa told me the best bait, its in the canned area and about $2.50 for a full day of fishing.

Man, this is awesome! I just fished in the wind this morning (I caught 9) and messed up several of my reels. This helps me understand. Slack line or line caught in the wind can cause loops in the line.

I trout fishing and catfish and just started to Bass fishing last year different 🤔 or just bigger stuff for Bass over trout fishing 🎣 my son got me to start to bass fish. Nice and fun but to hot 🥵 I hate the heat im at 8,000 high Desert Chama N.M. is not hot in the summer.

I rarely cast more than 30 to 50 yds, so that means the beginning of my line gets the wear and tear and the remainder is as new.

At the end of the season I just wind my line onto another empty reel spool so that the front worn end is the new backing and the new front of the line is as new.

You get twice as much use out of your line this way, and it’s never let me down

This interesting, I've never fished bass or crapies or anything like that, I fish inshore targeting roosters for example. Loading a reel with flouro or even mono depending on the reel it will end up spooling in 10 seconds because of capactity, you need at least 200 yards of line and 200 yards on flouro is super expensive and it won't work on a small reel

Spinning reels work good for light stuff. I am moving towards bait casters for catfishing and spoonbill snagging. Spinning reels don't have bait clickers. Old penn reels. Clean and grease. They work good as new. Spinning reels will fray braided line.

I've used all kinds of line on spinning reels and they ended up with bird nests and never casted very good. My current reel seemed to be amazing when I bought it according to specs and reviews, but it sucked and I hated it. I respooled with braid to fluoro leader and my god, this thing feels INCREDIBLE. I tried several times to bird nest it and failed. I'm finally happy with this setup, I just need to get rid of the junk Bass Pro basic rod.

As a steel head, fisherman knowing our fish can get up to 15pounds and more we do generally use high viz. main line with a 10 foot bumper of clear line, mainly fluorocarbon, and then to our bait, I would think that would work with the bass fisherman your thoughts

Try using Shimano reels you don't get those terrible glitches and line coming of your reel.

I think a couple of things need to be pointed out. Probably the biggesst mistake that I see when watching fishermen using spinning reels is cranking on the reel when the drag iss being taken. In a reel with a 5:1 ratio every crank on the handle will result in 5 twists being introduced into the line. And those twists just exacerbate the loop problems mentioned exponentially.
Also I disagree with your assessment that mono is better for getting a lure down deep. Monofilament actually floats. Fluorocarbon has a density very close to that of water so it doesn't float or sink. But braid is the densest of the three and sinks which makes it better at keeping the lure down deep. But even more significant is the fact that at any given pound test braid is much thinner than comparable strength mono of fluoro, thus it allows a diving lure to run deeper when the same length of line is out from the rod tip.
Mono is my choice for topwater fishing however. Because of its buoyancy it will not pull a surface lure down and the significant added stretch offered by mono helps improve hookup ratios for those who strike when they see the bite rather than wait for the weight.
