This gives me hope that there will be a peaceful comptetition between different nations with differing economic systems, rather than military confrontations and arms races like the Cold War.

When China has move so Japan and the US have to follow suit or otherwise they will lose all benefits and influences. There has been no Chinese's precedence, the West will never care for well-being of anyone other they themselves.

As much as I respect Japans strategic policies, I find it problematic, that It supports a communist military dictatorship. We should not forget how a similar policy played out in CCP china.

Asia is becoming more and more dynamic. More competitions means better quality and deals from competing countries for the developing countries. Love to see this region over take Europe or America in terms of trade, economic development and wealth.

Japan has no Indo-Pacific strategy. Even "Indo-Pacific" is an American term. Japan does what America tells them as a subservient defeated people. That is the essence of Japanese foreign policy.

Japan is just aping the work of China under the BRI in alignment with the West in order to dilute China's growing influence in the world, especially among developing countries. This is all just geopolitics play and not genuine assistance.

I wish people would stop framing it as a "rivalry between China and the US" as if the problem is that these 2 countries are jealous of each other.

The Chinese Communist Party is an evil regime that has engaged in the persecution, murder, torture, and genocide of Uyghurs, Tibetans, Falun Gong, crushed democracy in Hong Kong, plans to invade Taiwan, and has threatened to nuke Japan. They've claimed the entire South China Sea as their own private lake and chased Philippine boats out of their own waters. China's idea of "good relations" is for China to rule the world and for everyone else to behave like vassal slave nations kowtowing to the Chinese Emperor. The United States has finally awakened to the aggressive, destabilizing threat China is, and is finally starting to take a stand and say NO. If you want to call that a "rivalry", then ok.

Japan's approach to foreign infrastructure development is so radically different from China's Belt & Road Initiative. Japan required Indonesia to spend only 30% of the funding on Japanese components, so Indonesia was able to use a lot of local labor and suppliers. China typically uses almost exclusively Chinese construction firms with Chinese materials, Chinese components, Chinese labor, and puts virtually no money into the local economy. And the care and thoughtful planning Japan put into typhoon flood mitigation in the Philippines is a stark contrast to the reckless, slapdash, "tofu dreg" construction Chinese firms are infamous for - just look at all the dams, hydroelectric plants, and other BRI mega projects around the world that are now falling apart.

Here is my idea: Japan sees the writing on the wall and offers free Visas and a low level job to anyone in Indochina who can pass a basic elementary test in Japanese and is under the age of 30. While it is not a bad thing that Japan shrink in population, their particularly steep population decline will be bad for the region and the long term life of the country. They could easily solve this problem with a healthier immigration policy.

Vietnam has already picked Japan as its partner in High-Speed rail because they see how China trapped Asian countries in debt.
