The Dark Side of Modern Minecraft Servers

The paying to be unbanned thing is really dark because it means the server’s admins have a monetary incentive to ban long-time players, as they can be pretty sure that the player will use their mom’s credit card to get themselves unbanned, and since the players are kids they wont even realize they got banned for something they didnt actually do, and just think “oops i mustve broken a rule” instead of realizing whats actually going on

I remember when I used to obsessively play the Jerry&Harry server because it had peaceful factions (my favorite) and I had countless purchases, (max rank, fly, set time, a whole bunch of shit) and then one day they updated the server and poof, peaceful factions was gone. Never bought anything again.

The darkest place is Minecraft Bedrock, there you can get scammed before even entering a server.

I miss the days when you could go to one of those Minecraft server list sites and easily find some kid’s smp server that he was hosting off his mom’s pc.

As much as I hate p2w servers, there have been very rare but notable occasions where a server I played on had premium ranks, but you could also gain about 95% of the premium features for free by leveling up through a free ranking system. And on said server, it had crates, but you couldn't buy any of them. You got keys through events and from lower tier crates. There was also an MCMMO XP boost thing you could buy for the whole server that lasted a week.

I don't think things like that are inherently bad. But that's just my opinion. Most p2w servers are painfully atrocious.

We would have keydrops (So everyone online is given a key when one person buys) and money drops maybe aswell, tags, cosmetics, so that you can talk with color in chat and all that :)

I want to point out, its really easy to make ingame money on cosmic pvp if you know how to use the player market. Just picking up random stuff from spawn I managed to make enough ingame money to buy three tier 5? (tropico +) ranks for me and my friends. At the time the tropico rank went for like $70 Mil in-game money. I may have just gotten lucky, buuuut idk

A lot of people already knew this kinda stuff; which is why most people avoid these kinds of servers, I get how pump and dump faction servers can get under the radar; but it's horrifying that bigger long-term servers are able to get away with this.

Literally the owners havnt updated creative since 1.12 lmao
The owners also banned a ton of creative players who spoke up about the bullshit
Not to mention the towny servers where it takes 500 thousand to even make a town and 27 a day to upkeep it which is why all the towny servers are covered in ruins
The people who do buy ranks act like theyre hot shit and the staff allow the bullying
Of course the bullying is only allowed if you have a rank however
Also, another thing for creative: they removed 2 ranks recently and anybody who bought those 2 ranks were changed to have no rank and not given a refund

The other day I was playing on a public minecraft server, and saw a dude spend over a thousand REAL DOLLARS gifting the top paid player rank to all his friends on the server. Still waiting for the chargeback. And let's not forget about how easy this makes it for people with money to spend to potentially groom children on servers like this.

Having to pay money on a server for a game you already payed money for is insane. Imagine if Mojang did this, but that would never happen because creative mode already exists. The point is, that, if you dislike progression that much, just play creative. Paying tons of money for easy items and powers is no different then cheating when playing against those who prefer to play normally. Like imagine joining a server for the first time only to lose to someone who payed 100 dollars to have flight powers and doesn’t need to use ladders or towers to reach you or run away.

These scummy business models have been a staple of servers since at least 2014

Minecraft will go down in history as a game changer. If it ever does die out.

I once bought the God role for the Aspiria server for like I think around $100 (it had very p2w things like flying, god items, invincibility,and even the ability to change the time), then like a month later I discovered that Horizon guy and realized that I paid for something that was super illegal.

Whenever the payment model seen by the user is different from the payment model seen by the provider is different, there’s going to be plenty of room for disparity. If you have a server with per-month hosting costs, charge users with a per-month server subscription. If you’re putting money into a game before releasing it in one go, charge the customer one amount. Loot-boxes, player tiers, etc. will inevitably result in players being unequal to one another, and to their different senses of value being exploited.

In other words, free games and servers are misleading at best, and a scam at worst.

bedrock is a alot better (which I am surprised by since its meant to be the more popular version and it is) but on lifeboat I have to pay money to use skins in my library or i will have a random skin which really annoys me

I love lootboxes, but only Overwatch's because they're done right. Blizzard themselves aren't a morally amazing company, but that system in particular is very well done. You can earn boxes for free just by playing. There's no pressure to pay more money other than what's needed to buy the game itself. This is an amazing way to make loot boxes/crates/chests/ect. But what most MC servers do is force players to buy their boxes in order to do anything. Want a title? You have to buy it, it can never be earned on your own time. Want a cool looking diamond sword? You have to buy it, and all the free swords look like garbage. Want in game money? You have to buy it, and any free money you earn is only on free money weekends that happen only once a month. And this also goes for most other video games, too, not just Minecraft. It's sad to see lootboxes, something that can easily be solely for cosmetic or non-pressure fun, be turned into capitalistic greed everywhere
