Well done Paul. This video would not have been credible had you not owned other Hilleberg products. Well presented and clearly explained, I would not have watched it through otherwise. Paul one question I have however, I've been watching these videos for over a decade. These videos were initially very instructional, how to build a fire and get it going, how to create things from what you find around you ie. spoons, forks, what is the best wood to burn reducing smoke. Best stoves, tents, knives, axes, saws, tinder, trees to camp under. Paul it seems to be a video of a walk, what food am I cooking, where I bought my food from, lets watch me eat, lets look at the alcohol I've bought, lets discuss the alcohol I've bought, look at me drinking the alcohol I bought. I feel that the wild camping community has moved away from what made it so popular. Do you feel that the wild camping community is being devalued by the current trend in videos posted? This is no reflection on you at all. All I ask. Is there a need for discussion on this? When I say these videos I don't include yours.

One of the best tent reviews I've seen for ages Paul. I'm not rushing out to buy a Hilleberg any time soon, for me it would be overkill, although I do own the Terranova southern cross 1, that should do for all the weather conditions I'm likely to go camping in. However, the calm and measured way you approach the subject is wonderfully appealing. ATB Paul.

Unna is the one to go for but you know it only if you’ve used it. Got the brand new Suolo as well, got it up in the garden once when bought it… Unna for one, Tarra for two. End of the story.

For me, the Akto in Scotland above the treeline, in poor weather, will fit small pitches. Unna for anything else.

I've got five HIlleberg tents, including the soulo and the Unna. The Unna is one of my two favorite tents while the Soulo I have to say is my least favorite of the lot. What is not mentioned about the Soulo is that it has abysmal ventilation and has the worst condensation of all my eight tents, and while this is a personal thing, I sleep on my left side - which has me facing the wall rather than the door side which I'd prefer. The Unna let's the user decide which end they can put their head, while the Soulo requires the head at the wide end of the tent - which is the wrong side for my tastes. I also like that the Unna goes up faster and only has two poles, both the same length. Lastly, if one is tall, then one will appreciate the 90" of length and the higher head room.

@olamikalsen3367 - 09.09.2024 03:38

Bought the Unna because 1 night overnighters on snow in Norway wintertime weekdays, is what time afford me mostly. Skiing with the smallest pulk sledge I have, weight is not a problem and I dont bring much more stuff than Paul does, its just winter size. At 174 cm tall, I dig a snow ditch and sit like in a real chair, not just the chair kit. I use a multifuel burner on white gas inside the Unna when cooking. This is only possible because of the size of the Unna, and no problem with ventilation with part of the top vent open. If I only was camping on my own, Unna is by far the tent most suited in all seasons and weather if you get the extra poles and footprint. Pegs change with seasons anyway. Everything positive about the Unna was said by Paul in this video, and I have nothing to add. Thank you for the review. ❤😊

Black Diamond Ahwahnee is another great option, though the breathable fabric won't last as long as a Hilleberg. It's got insane headroom, two huge mesh and/or solid walls, a snap to set up, and super roomy. I used 2 of them for 20 years, then went to an Allak 3.

@hedleythorne
@hedleythorne - 12.09.2024 00:27

I may be out on a limb here, but I think the reason the Una isn't popular is that when you pay a premium price for a tent it needs that special or unique feature that you are investing in for specific scenarios and uses - for the Soulo it is a storm proof shelter, for an Abisko Lite 1 it is the compact pack size etc. The Una is a lovely tent but it's purpose is easily filled by cheaper brands as it has such a conventional design and so you're not paying extra for anything special. It is quite good in strong winds, but not exceptional. It has good space, but so does a Vango. It is waterproof, but so is a Jack Wolfskin. There isn't that "extra mile" in any specific feature. What it excels at is being "good all-round" - for that it is superb, and of course it is beautifully made. But is that enough to warrant the Hilleberg price premium?

The one thing that completely turns me off the Hilleberg red/black label 1 person tents, is the lack of a full mesh door with solid back like on the 2-3p tents. All of them have 1/4 to 1/2 mesh at the top. Also many of them have airflow/condensation issues, particularly the Soulo. If you get the mesh inner, it brings the price up to the Rogen 2, and only ~150USD away from the much better Allak 2. If the Unna inner had a full mesh door, I would be a lot more interested in it. I am in Canada though, and the Summers can get pretty hot.

I bought a tent 10 years ago from Vaude its a 3 person tent for 200 € and have used it a lot in those years even in minus 10 degrees Celsius temperature and in heavy rain hail and wind and i have never hade any problem with it leaking water or anything else it's just a bit heavy but it sure is a robust tent thats for sure 😊
We love this tent 😊.

I don't understand how a Tend that cost over a thousand Euros and it's brand name stands for high quality of being one of the best in the world has so many problems😂.

I love my Unna. I've had it for about 10 years. It is a more practical tent than I thought when I bought it. I also use 10mm poles to get a bit more stability. It's roomy, flexible, easy to set up, even if it's a little heavier.

It was my favorite for many years, but what ultimately got me to change it out was the weight and the fact that once the door was locked up, the mosquito netting was pretty small at the top. I wanted to like the Niak, and my friends went with the Rogen, but I decided to go for the Durston X-Mid Pro and will probably change that to some version of the X-Dome once they are out.

I've had my Akto for 10 years or so now and the only downside is that it can suffer from condensation a little more than other tents although it has much more warmth inside. A practical change that can be made is to add mesh panels at each small end of the inner and leave the outer vents open.

Why not peg the four corners first and then push the poles through? That way the tent won´t fly away if it´s windy.

Its no doubt a class then, I was Eye balling this for Scotting outtings that would do for perhaps only 1 night maybe 2 nights, But OMG it has an outrageous price tag! perhaps if I was a young buck with 30 years camping in me I could justify it, I know somw of the lads buy tents under 200 bucks get a year maybe 3 and bin them or sell the on for Buttons, Granted you could sell it but you'd be hard pressed to get half your money back. I thought i was made up when you reviewed this tent then my world crumbled when i sourced the price online. I found the Hillaberg Allak 3 of interest perfect for me and gear and plenty of kit room especially to tak ethe wee lad fishing with me, but again a substantial investment. Thanks for the Vids, great to see what's out there! It's really difficult to keep up with whats the best gear to purchase at the right price to make it affordable and buy right first time around, all our kit with scouts is provided but to go solo I have bought a lot of gear and it seems never ending, bearing in mind im do my best to only get the basic of kit of good quality on an affordable budget. The Price of a Hillaberg tent could probable buy a mid range complete outfit, fit for purpose for 3/4 nights camping. anyway thnaks Paul, keep up the vids coming, good work mate..

I’m in northern Colorado and almost every night is crazy windy when I’m out. There are tons of people that hike here so I relegate my backpacking trips to shoulder seasons now because I hate camping in view of anyone else. Regardless of the time of year it’s extremely windy here at night and everything is exposed and at high elevation. We use Hilly tents to survive the night. However, they are not that comfortable in my opinion at 6’1” they are all too short for me with my sleeping pad and bag. But it’s what I use most of the time. If I know I’m going to be in cover at a lower elevation in another area then anything works including no tent. I wish they would design the tent around a real 6’3” person with a winter sleeping pad and a winter down bag. Basically make them all at least tall and long enough to not contact the inner tent and bag. For the money I’m not interested in covering my bag with anything to prevent condensation.

I am Nobody. I think the tent is great. But not for everyone. No vestibule (or how it is spelled). But it is easy to set up. Bomb proof. Can take lots of wind, also cross wind. Lots of space for one person. True free standing. Perfect for kayakers and high mountain trips. Also, very small foot print. Good in rocky areas where a spot with soft ground larger than 2x3 meters simply does not exists. Lots of these places in scandnavian mountains.
For camping in open areas in strom, the Soulo is better as it has vestibule and is a bit easier to pitch. For trips in wind protection areas you can get away with a much cheaper and lighter tent. .

I have not cooked in the vestibule yet, but if i'd do it that detaching the inner trick works in this one too, I cannot believe that I have never thinked that. Thank You for sharing that, that is just amazing one for one person tents 😃
