A book review of Idaho: A Novel, by Emily Ruskovich. Just my thoughts and opinions.

I liked the book despite the vagueness of it, the nonlinear chronology, and the distressing subject matter.

Redeeming qualities of the book included characterization, metaphors, originality, and for me, location, since I live very close to most of the places where the novel takes place.

The novel didn't violate any of my three major fails which are gratuitous violence, gratuitous sex, and gratuitous bad language. I very much appreciate a novel that doesn't try to shock me with something unnecessary and unpleasant.

That's not to say there aren't any unpleasant or sexual scenes in this book. There are, but they are necessary to the plot and not overdone.

Well done, Emily!
