Donam seowon Eungdodang is a lecture hall of Donam Confucian Academy. It is presumed to have been in 1633. Donam Seowon provides a foothold where Yehak, or the study of propriety, was manifested in Eungdodang.
The building features gables at each end of the roof with two canopies below them. The function of the canopies is to protect from rain and wind the parts of the building which are not covered by the gable roof and to provide additioanal structural reinforcement. When the academy was moved here in 1880, this building was left at the original location. It was only relocated here much later 1971.
One day in early summer, I headed to Donamseowon Confucian Academy, which is located in an open and cool field. Looking at the old Donam seowon Confucian Academy's Eungdodang, I was grateful that such a space still exists today, recalling the dignity and spirit of the scholars in the past.
I sat on the floor of Eungdodang and began to draw a Soul Fishing.
Perhaps because of the open space on the front and back of the Eungdodang floor, the wind was cool and the air was fresh, so I felt my heart was clean. Eungdodang would have been a space where scholars who were absorbed in learning could help them straighten their behavior. I think this is the same spirit as executing my own thoughts about my drawings.
"Soul Fishing" with the shortest fishing rod in the world!
My work needs only a paper, black ink and brushes, and my zeichnung composes the circle, triangle, semi-circle, and square. I think they are the common language belonging to any time and people, any one can encounter these universal and common points streaming in humanity.
