I think Michael Cudlitz is doing a fantastic job portraying Abraham. I also read the character as someone sincerely emotional, rooting for the under-dog, and deeply loving towards other people. I think Abraham's fixation with the mission of getting to DC has a lot to do with his wanting to restore humanity because of the love he has for it, in addition to compassion and patience for humanity's flaws. That said, I also think that is why he loves to smash walker heads: walkers are a reminder of all her lost; not just loved ones but this idea of what humanity is and could be, which in the face of the zombie apocalypse has just been shattered and completely transformed.

Remember in season 2 when that kid Randell was getting tortured by Daryl and was explaining to Him that his group raped a man's family right in from of em. Well in the comic's, Abraham vents to Rick that a group of men raped his family and that's why he killed them, turned them inside out and his family was scared of him and left him. I think that's kind of a connection if the show goes along with Abraham's back story
