No, it's not right to claim that NATO and Russia approved of what Erdogan did. Russia and the US had to avoid fighting each other, and each had to take care not to allow Turkey to cause Russia-US fighting. They allowed Erdogan but didn't approve. Both find him to be a pain in the neck. However, neither approves of the militant socialism of the YPG, et al. The US holds its nose about the YPG because the US has grander designs, as in dominating the entire planet. I like most of what the YPG is about, but I'm anti-war and I don't buy the "Assad is nothing but a monster" nonsense.

There is a lot of issues with Turkey.

Their recalcitrance regarding a negotiated international water agreement with Syria. Syrian water supplies have been held hostage by the dams installed in Turkey holding the headwaters.

Then there is the Gulen movement whose meddling U.S.A. protected Pennsylvania based radical islamist still has ties to Turkey and has been placing operatives into China perhaps with our blessings to disrupt China and the Silk Road. He is protected, runs private charter schools funded in many states with public education dollars and funnels funds into political campaigns as well.
