Shigeru Kayama mentioned in his book of memoirs that Tanaka told him the monster would be a "sea monster" that would be a "cross between a gorilla and a whale". So you would have to assume the body would've looked completely different.

I can see the mushroom cloud but I also see Pumpkin Head.

This could work as the head of another monster but for Godzilla it's better that it got reworked the way it did.

Weirdly enough, I think it would fit better into Monsterverse as-is instead of how it was shown in the video here. I also doubt Godzilla would have looked so much like his Monsterverse deaign id they had used a similar look for 1954 - it would probably look far more alien.

The movie from 1998 did not have anything remotely resembling Godzilla.. 2014 was not much better, but in defense of the 1998 film, at least I stayed awake to watch it. The 2014 movie keeps putting me to sleep for some reason..

They did redesign Godzilla closer to the manga-spec: Godzilla's Counterattack / Raids Again. It didn't stay, but has been used for analog horror over the past few years. Arguably the humanoid Gs bursting out of the tail of the frozen ShinG also count.

Don't know if I would have loved Godzilla as much if he had the "Mushroom" design, partly because I'm not into horror/eldritch stuff and because I f*king love dinosaurs (grew up in 90s).

Well nowadays, it may look goofy, unnerving, but goofy. But maybe back then it might've terrify the Japanese audience given the atomic bomb was still fresh on their mind.
