He forced a move to Madrid. Back then having a year left on your contract meant that your value was a fraction of what it truly was. It's not quite like that today. Owen was worth 25 mill easily and we got 8 for him. Damn Madrid used him as a substitute for a year and still got 17 mill for him after a year of riding the bench. When he left us he was a Premier League superstar. It wasn't that bad though. Baros had just won the golden boot at Euro 2004 and Cisse had just won Ligue 1 player of the year in a league that had Drogba in it and they were both young so we looked all set. Then those two weren't good at all. Benitiez was never the greatest when it came to molding young attacking players. He'd have done much better with Owen who like Torres was already top class when Benitez got hold of him.
