Robert Lee Rice was 17 years old and married when he was sent from Chattanooga, Tennessee to go fight in the Vietnam War.

"I don't have a way to take care of a wife," Mr. Rice said. "I don't even have a high school diploma. So, this was my way of fixing that was joining the service."

He wanted to be an Army Chaplin's Assistant.

"I really started preaching before I went into the service," Mr. Rice said. "I was a teenage preacher."

Fighting on the battlefields of Vietnam had a profound impact on Robert Rice.

"You never know what you are capable of doing until the opportunity presents itself," Mr. Rice.

He found with the the First Division 28th Infantry.

"I was shot in the hip. The bullet came out my back," Mr. Rice said.

He lost a lot of blood lying on the battlefield in Vietnam.

"It was looking so bad. I said, Lord, I'm ready to die. You can come get me right now." Mr. Rice said.

But it was his sergeant who came to get him. He dragged him to safety.

"I was in the hospital for a month and a half," Mr. Rice told us.
