Two albums, "Swiss Movement" and "Second Movement", both collaborations between Les McCann and Eddie Harris, aided and abetted by brilliants such as Donald Dean, Leroy Vinegar and others, are two of the most influential albums in my experience of Jazz. The two principals were at the top of their game, each delivering crystal-clear, incredible solos and improvs that blended perfectly to produce music that made your spirit soar and that you often just couldn't sit still to. If you've not heard the "Swiss Movement" album, I particularly recommend you look up "Cold Duck Time" (the first time they had ever seen the tune) and their inimitable version of the oft-covered but never equaled "Compared to What". Wow ... Just Wow ...
There have been so many luminaries in the development of Jazz, from Miles Davis, Coltrane, the Bird and Charlie Mingus, who largely defined and greatly expanded Jazz through such leading lights as Pat Metheny who (much as the Beatles did with Rock & Roll) fused Jazz with virtually every kind of world music. However you define the pantheon of Jazz greats, in my book Les McCann and Eddie Harris have an honored place in it.
my first real jazz album purchase as a highschool student...it holds up! 1971...this mutha still swings

ОтветитьMy dad knew Eddie Harris, I think they grew up in the same Kentucky town, Lynch, Ky . Growing up in a place called Lynch as a black man would tend to make you quite serious.

ОтветитьHeard this for the first time in the early 80’s .. Let’s say it’s never left my mind since... Brings back feelings of nostalgia 😌😌
ОтветитьI Used Work At A Club In L.A. Called Jazz Etc. I Was Blessed To Have Met Them Both Les McCaan Was The Headliner New Years Eve Of 1991 The Song Is 50 Yrs. Old Need I Say More.
ОтветитьI remember hearing this as a kid in my Dad's 1974 Pontiac Grand Prix. Still as exquisite today as it was hearing for the first time. Masterful work. Gloriously majestic 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾❤❤❤
ОтветитьOK i'm reading the notes. "Les is ruled by the child within him. Eddie was as serious a bad X-Ray." .........Now my first knowledge of Eddie Harris was buying a record called The Reason Why I'm Talking S--t. I had no idea who Eddie Harris was at the time being an ignorant teen. For those who don't know the record, one side was music, the other features Eddie's live 'adult' stand up comedy routine, & me & my close school buddies knew every line. Which is more than a little strange thinking back because we were kids in the UK, reciting material originaly performed in what sounded like a 70's Jazz supper club predominantly frequented by African American adults.
Anyway, he didn't sound so serious that night, & was pretty slick with the one liners when I went to see him many years later...But I realise stage persona & real life are not the same. & there's no question that Eddie was deadly serious about his music despite the jokes. .
That comment re. Birds & Feathers makes me remember Leonard Feather ( musician , composer ) A true patron of jazz , NY , Los Angeles _ _ _ wherever it was happening .
ОтветитьAnd a great song indeed

ОтветитьI don’t expect anyone to read this but I gotta share this anyway. I was searching through the jazz section of one of my favorite record stores, looking for anything that I’ve never heard of that catches my eye. I saw this album cover, and it wasn’t expensive so I bought. Wow. Such a great album, and especially this song.
