It was so cold on this particular morning that I had to scrape ice from the windscreen before setting off through the valley to the charming Kettlewell village which is located in Upper Wharfedale in the North Yorkshire Dales in England. It is believed that the name Kettlewell is Anglo Saxon and comes from 'Cetel Wella' which means a bubbling spring or stream. Cotton and lead mining played an important part in the history of the village. Lead mining brought prosperity to the village in the 17th century but closed in the late 19th century.
St. Mary's Church was consecrated on St Mary's Day, 8th. September 1885, St. Mary's Day. The original church was Norman and built around 1120 but was demolished to make way for a Georgian church in 1820, which, saving the tower, was demolished in 1883 to make way for the present church.
Professor Moorman wrote this about Kettlewell nearly one hundred years ago and it is as true today as it ever was.
'The charm of Kettlewell is an abiding charm, and to those of us whose life is spent amid the hurley-burley of city life, the village seems the peculiar abode of peace and quiet beauty; its limestone terraces, with their fringes of hazel and rowan coppices give to the district a characteristic beauty. But the special glory of Kettlewell is not that of colour, but of line. Situated at the junction of the main valley of the Wharfe with side valley, which descend from the Coverhead Pass, Kettlewell is the converging point of many contour lines, and to the eye which delights in the flow and ripple of sky line there is a beauty in Kettlewell which is all its own.'
