Is age privilege keeping you from getting a job?
Maybe. It might depend on the job, but I was asked what it was like when I was in college by my students this week I can honestly say 15 years ago my friends and I in college were not worried about finding a job when we graduated, I knew I would graduate and get a job. I have another video where I show how I have applied to many high paying federal jobs and been offered all of them. But is that because of age privilege. Some countries like Canada reserve certain jobs for people under 30, (that is not legal in some jobs in the us, but for things like the military, firefighters and other physical jobs that is a legal discrimination).
Not many companies are going to come out and say “Well, we stop accepting candidates around age 33 for these roles…” because, well, broadly that could be illegal and most companies ain’t in the game of admitting illegality. (Doing it where they think others can’t see it? Sure.)
In the US, the legal age on discrimination stuff is around 40. Is it really 40, though? I don’t honestly know.
older workers find a less tolerant workplace: Why many say age discrimination abounds. Older workers are everywhere these days. And so, it seems, is age discrimination. Roughly two-thirds of adults over 50 believe older workers face discrimination in the workplace, according to a new AARP report
In tech, I think 35 means you’re dead joking. Maybe if you have a 4B or higher net worth, you can exist plausibly into your 40s, but good luck not getting sneered at.
OK, this person has a certain degree of experience in what they do.” If ageism commences at 35, that means you basically have a 12-13 year window to become “an expert” in something, and then you spend the back-end scrambling to prove that you could maybe do some work for less than you’re worth.
War on talent exists because we over-value youth, lie about our desire for expertise and competence, and don’t like to pay people what they’re actually worth even though goods and services prices are increasing every single day.
