I wonder what you'd discover if you pumped a few thousand gallons of water into the hole all at once, then followed the flow. It might dislodge a plug, or wash some of the dirt clear. IF you did do a dig-out, would you try to remove the material from he cave, or just relocate it within the cave?

It's great that you do this....but after reading about the Nutty Putty case I feel that if you get stuck you shouldn't receive any help from the authorities.
You went down there on your own risk.... people shouldn't pay for you ignorance.
You get stuck, they come with a cement truck, seal it up and that is that.

It seems like the reason that the pool is above the "ground" is that the rock you tried to get out of the way seems more like it blocks another hole which is deeper. You should stay on the robe while you down there the huge amount of water which drops in there must go somewhere.
