I think he liked the "courageous" and "honor" part of combat rather than the killing one. He was stoic and somewhat humorous when it came to talking about war, and it really reflected his preference of a life of duty rather than one made with civilian comfort.

Probably a bit late but for unkillable soldiers I think the French Marshal Nicolas Oudinot has Carton de Wiart beaten. For during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars he was wounded 34 times.
