Ancient Lakes and Dusty Lake - Potholes Coulee, Washington State

Spring hiking to Ancient Lakes and Dusty Lake offers a captivating journey through a landscape rich in geological wonders and natural beauty. Located in the heart of the Columbia River Basin, this region is characterized by its rugged terrain, towering cliffs, and shimmering bodies of water.

Potholes Coulee is one of the most dramatic features left behind by the great Ice-Age floods. It features two parallel alcoves separated by a near-vertical rib of basalt, forming the Ancient Lake Basin to the north and the Dusty Lake Basin to the south, with cataracts ascending to Quincy Lakes, plunge pools at their bases, and elongated depressions developing between flood bars and coulee walls.

During Spring the landscape undergoes a remarkable transformation. Wildflowers carpet the ground in hues of yellow, purple, and blue, creating a picturesque backdrop against the rugged region.
