Anthropogenic threats are a huge concern for many marine animals. Ecotourism works to reduce these threats and educate individuals on marine animals and how to better interact with marine environments. However, ecotourism is only beneficial if executed correctly. In this TEDx Talk, Stella Simonds will explore and break down how ecotourism can be both beneficial and harmful to ocean ecosystems. It will also dive deep into how sharks, as a stigmatized species, are affected by ecotourism. Stella wants others to understand how policies and work related to one species can affect a larger food web and ecosystem. Stella Simonds has always been interested in marine biology and the ocean. She is involved in The Masters School community as a lead tutor at The Writing Center, science research member, peer leader, and captain of the girls varsity soccer team. She has always considered herself to be an adventurous person, including getting her PADI rescue scuba diver certification at 13 years old, which allowed her to explore environmental threats to ocean ecosystems. She encourages all to be mindful of how their actions may have bigger impacts than expected. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at
