Live Tree to PRIMITIVE BOW in 24hrs - All Natural Materials

For this week's survival skills video I'm going back to my roots! I'll show you how to build a primitive bow and arrows from a living tree in just 24 hours! For this survival bow I'm using serviceberry and force drying it over a fire to dry the wood enough to make a good selfbow. As the bow dries, I lower it down near the coals to fire harden the bow's belly. Some tree species will develop drying cracks if force dried but serviceberry handles it very well. The primitive arrows are made from ocean spray and force dried over the fire in the same way. I used stinging nettle to bushcraft a natural cordage bow string but didn't make it quite stout enough. It broke four times before I moved on to making a string of elk sinew. A sinew bow string is much stronger for the diameter. I'll have to give the nettle another try in the near future. The arrows were fletched with turkey feathers. I only used only natural materials and a hatchet and knife for the entire build.

I’m not sure I’d agree with the term primitive. Maybe traditional or Neolithic? The technology used in bows is still useful today. The only major change is in compound bows. But any bow that’s not compound is very close to what these tribes used 20,000 years ago. It’s simple, minimalist, mechanical technology.

Mr. Clay. First of all, I just want to say thank you very much for your generous content your like a brother from another mother. so I’ve been breaking bows for about four or five months made a few decent ones but just got my first stick of Osage and it the guy sent me a green stick so I went taboo and speed, dried it and checked right down the middle, so I split it in half got two narrow staves i’ll have to be super careful to get a bow out of them with my inexperience but that being said I’ve got the sapwood cleanly removed off the back of the stave but it’s the thin rings on top. You know I know you know what I’m talking about and it seems like everybody wants to go down to the thicker rings well I got this top ring clean. Why do I have to go down anymore? I guess I don’t really care about anyone else’s opinion I’ve watched enough of them to know that compared to you. They’re full of shit. If you get time, I would appreciate your input, sir. God bless your family and take care.

With nettle, it is best to let it dry partially soak, then dry again. This process isn't really doable in 24 hours though.
