Hello I'm Joan and this book is called Fall, The Mystery of Robert Maxwell by John Preston and I was gripped from the very first page. It's a biography of Robert Maxwell who may be known to some readers. He was born into real poverty in Eastern Europe. He fought in the Second World War and was decorated for bravery. He made his way to England where he started the business of building up a media and publishing empire. And really he was a Rupert Murdoch wannabe. That's who he wanted to emulate. He was a man of extraordinary appetite. He was gluttonous the amount that he could put away was extraordinary. He had nine children and he had a lot of staff whom he bullied and threatened and treated very badly and working for him must have been really unpleasant. He's probably best remembered for having fallen we think off the back of his boat called The Lady Ghislaine. Ghislaine Maxwell - ring any bells for anybody? In the Mediterranean and he was discovered dead in the water. After which it was found that he had embezzled pension funds to the tune of around 760 million pounds from his staff in his various companies and is probably most remembered for that. As biographies go this one is fascinating and entertaining in equal measure.
