The Belgian artists Don Ken and Kobe exhibit their work.
KNOKKE -- In autumn of this year the Robinsons Art Gallery organises an exhibition that will make you banish the autumn blues. From October 29th you are most welcome in the gallery in Knokke to (re)discover the works of the Belgian artists Don Ken and Kobe. Both artists combine craftsmanship and joie de vivre. Highly recommended!
Don Ken
An immensely tall, red Mickey will show you the way to the Robinsons Art Gallery, like a lighthouse. It is a sculpture of the Ostend artist Don Ken (° 1958), who appeals to many people with his playful and universal style showing clear pop art influences.
Very recognizable as well are Don Ken's paintings, in which he incorporates well-known Disney figures, adding pointed slogans or quotes. It is up to the spectator to interpret these texts as a hidden self-glorification or as a funny way of self-criticism.
Don Ken's work is definitely never heavy, but tempts you to smile.
Kobe
The bronze and marble sculptures of Kobe are tempting as well.
More than anybody else Kobe knows how to portray women and horses, purely and beautifully in every position. His sculptures, which are almost flat, attract every art lover with their peculiar, cumbersome elegance. They are immediately recognizable: they look figurative, but they are flirting with the bounds of the abstract. They are universal, but always unmistakably Kobe.
Kobe was born in Kortrijk in 1950. Just like Jacques Saelens he celebrates his 60th birthday this year. A good opportunity for a (renewed) acquaintance with this talented artist.
Practically
Don Ken & Kobe open on October 29th 2010 and exhibit until December 13th 2010.
The admission for the exhibition is free from Thursday until Monday, from 11 a.m. till 6 p.m.
