The multi-figured compositions is striking in scale, but not emotionally impressive. To my immodest taste, his portraits are deeper and better.

Ilya Repin's style is rather like a more serious Russian version of Norman Rockwell. I mean that as a good compliment. Great drawing, difficult compositions with so many people to include. Ilya captures the expressions, the characters and the mood of the moment with the feeling that we are there sharing the experience. Thank you Master Painters for introducing Ilya's work to us.
