December 21, 1988 - Shortly after taking off from Heathrow Airport, Pan Am Flight 103 suddenly explodes in the skies above Lockerbie, Scotland. As the wreckage rains down on the small town, fires break out. All 259 people on board are killed and eleven more in the town also die.

The debris from the crash is scattered over 2,000 square kilometres and the area becomes the largest crime scene in the world.
