How does an overdraft happen? Well, it happens when you as the bank account user do not have the required amount of money to make a particular transaction but your bank covers that cost for you regardless.

How to overdraft your M&T bank account:
1. Open your web browser and visit www.mtb.com
2. Log into your M&T account.
3. Head on over to the “standard overdraft practices” feature that M&T Bank provides for its customers.
4. Click on “Authorize transactions”
5. This is the list of transactions that M&T Bank will overdraft for you:
• Transactions overdrawing your account using checks.
• Transactions using your checking account number.
• Automatic bill payments
6. Note that there are transactions that M&T Bank will not authorize and pay overdrafts for unless you ask them to by calling their helpline and requesting them to do so. Visit www.mtb.com to get the M&T helpline number.
7. This is the list of transactions that M&T Bank will not authorize unless you request:
• ATM transactions.
• Your everyday debit transactions such as buying groceries and food.

M&T Bank charges you an overdraft fee of $15- $38.50 per overdraft fee. Note that this fee will only apply to transactions that cause your account an overdraft of $5 or more. If this isn’t making sense to you, here’s an example; let’s say you buy an item and your account falls to -$3.69, an overdraft fee will not be incurred.
