Thanks for the video. Exactly what I was thinking about/ trying to choose. Synology is going downhill interms of everything I feel. I use a lot of synology for networking and Nas…

Does Synology read these comments? Or just wait for sales of older units to fall before introducing a new (and improved?) product?
Synology knows that their products are cheap (good) but have low processing power, minimal network capability, etc. (bad).
Plug-in network cards address the 10 Gbe capability with a small price premium if the customer chooses. What do customers really want?

for me the question now is... DS1522+.... Zima Cube Pro... or ... DIY... if you'd be able to compare the zima pro with ds1522+ would love to see it.

Hi! I literally bought this device yesterday! I don't know much about compatibility and how it works. I saw an Ironwolf drive that has this model number on the compatibility list "ST10000VN000 - 3AK101" (it's the only 10TB drive from ironwolf in the list) and I am wondering if it is the same drive as the one that I'm wanting to buy. The one I want has this model number "ST10000VN0008". As you can see, almost all the numbers are the same, but this one has an "8" in the end, while the other one has "3AK101". Is it the same thing? Can I use this model even if it's not the same thing? And one thing I would like to know is: do the exos drives work on this device?

I have DS918+, and I am happy with it. Upgraded RAM, added 2 caching NVMEs, and upgraded LAN to 2.5gbit with USB adapter. And it has hardware transcoding.

no matter how great synology makes their systems, they have ruined it for certain customers by purposely restricting what drives you can use and other proprietary accessories. not being able to add other non-seagate non-synology drives and other pettiness is a dealbreaker.

I've had mine in the office for 6+ months but I bought it as a backup unit for multiple PCs and VMs. I like ABB for this purpose. It also runs a handful of docker containers. That's all I ask of it so I haven't been disappointed. As an all around home NAS, this unit falls sadly short. As do the majority of their current offerings. There is no reason to get a Synology NAS for the home. Their proprietary nonsense with drives, ram and NVMEs is alarming to say the least. For a private company, they sure act like they are driven by shareholders. How about listening to at least part of your customer base? Other vendor's RAM works without error. Widen the compatibility list. Do the same with NVMEs. Throw in a Celeron. I'd buy that.

DS923+ 88009 yen (10G doofy is 25300)
DS423+ 65003 yen
DS1522+ 110000 yen
Ouch. I think I'll keep the 918+ a bit longer. It's not broken, I am not looking forward to having to replace it...

Interesting review, I'm looking for a 4 bay NAS, previous was a Netgear 314, they dropped Cloudsync so bought a QNAP TVS-473A 5 months ago, major issues with disks dropping out. Backplane Mosfet failures well known about. So suggestions welcome.

What are these workarounds for media conversion? You cant just mention this without more details. The CPU for most is the single most pressing issue with Synology devices in general. So if there is a practical soltion that is not switching to QNAP let us know. Thanks

I will save up for the 1522+ as I have two j series NAS at this point and would like to consolidate them. I am a home user these units backup my HTPC and is acts as a second media server beyond the HTPC. The 2nd unit backs up my gaming PC. I also have an 8TB external HD that acts as a backup to the 1st NAS. My HTPC does all the transcoding for me before archival. This was a very good video I just wish I had more $$ to upgrade all at once.

I have a stack of WD 18TB Red Pro drives I want to put into a NAS however the DS923+ or more likely the DS1522+ but with them not being on Synology's "compatibility list" its forcing me to look elsewhere. 😞 They are shooting themselves in the foot in lost sales with all these drive limitations.

My old 415+died a couple off days ago I bought a DS923+ (black friday deal) home use for me its enough. My plexmedia is on it, but my plexserver runs on a debian system with a graphics card which does the encode jobs further I use it for my photo collection, and as a backup system . I mounted some shares for my proxmox server. For now I use link aggregation, but I would consider to buy a 10gb nic and put in a nvme voor read caching (proxmox server), time will learn if I need more ram

i own an old synology ds415play and are currently looking at updating - it seems synology are trying to lock users into their environment like apple with enterprise drives and ssds that are artificially locked to their hardware. Instead I'm thinking of upraid, but the frustrating thing about DIY is a lack of mobo choice in ITX if you want a nice small form factor, and the cost of a nice build is close to a turnkey box anyway. You can buy cheap old servers, but they are super noisy and power hungry. When I add up all the costs, I'm basically so close to turnkey but have to build and manage the sucker which seems to defeat the whole purpose of NAS IMO. Maybe ZImacube is the way to go.

What are these work arounds mentioned for transcoding? I'm looking to buy my first NAS and I really wanted the 423+ for a multimedia server but unfortunately it didn't go on sale like I hoped for Black Friday. The 923+ did though and its at $480 on Newegg, Amazon, and BH Photos. I didn't want to do the 923+ because of it's supposed lack of transcoding but at that price, I'm considering it.

What should I buy? Thinking of finally replacing the 413j (3 drives, 4.71 TB out of 5.36 TB in use, 1 bay failed years ago). Family members use DS Video (phone app or browser, very slow to navigate) or Windows explorer (quite fast) to navigate device. Living room tv has an older Chromecast (need to upgrade to the newer model with Google tv, which is sitting on a shelf). Want to keep using WD Red Pro drives (buy new ones or keep these?). Thx!

Synology seems to be, slowly, trying to make their HDD's the only compatible solution storage, and with a higher price tag and 5400RPM (for home users) drives.

They can say what they want regarding to their HDD firmware being better, bla bla bla, but this is nothing more than monopolization!

I own the ds920+ and i don't need to upgrade but, when the time arrives, I'll see if Synology went on the ridiculous monopolization tactic. If so, probably i will go to an alternative.

I did upgrade it tho to 16 GB Ram (3rd party - works fine) and to 400 GB Synology NVMe drives. Also have the 10GB network port that connects via a dedicated switch to my desktop. All in all I think it's an amazing NAS - love it.

Pretty disappointed with my 923+ and am returning it. It's incredibly loud during drive activity (the chassis seems to be adept at amplifying drive noise) and CPU usage during Plex streaming without transcoding happening sits at 99% for no discernible reason, almost constantly. I thought the lack of HW transcode wouldn't be a big deal, but apparently it is. Synology really picked the worst possible CPU for this application.

I want to use this server to share photos and videos with the family. The videos are not movies just videos taken from a camera. Android and IPhone. Should i look for a model that has video transcoding or will this server be enough for that purpose. Im concerned about the video sharing the family would probably like to view the video before deciding to download it.

Amazon USA is selling a used DS923+ for USD $473. I want to buy that because new one is $599, but not sure.
What and how should I check and which key electric components and features? I would have 15 days of full refund under Amazon prime coverage.  Please suggest and help.
My use be only keeping photos, videos, documents and may set up 3 security cameras down the roads.

Hello:
A year ago we took your advice to buy a NAS for our small office. Unfortunately I don't know what we are doing wrong, but the NAS is excessively slow. We have connected it to the work network and everything is fine but there is no way to make it run faster. A 200Gb file takes all night on the internal network and I don't want to tell you about sending it online.

Please, do you have a guide on how to configure it correctly or something like that?

Any help would be welcome

Thanks

Was chatting to Synology support agents (live chat) looking for recommendations and they weren't convincing - conflicting info. Quite tough knowing which model hardware to match to the need.

In my case I was looking for 7-10 user small business using Syn. Drive to access PDFs and other 'Office' files, but also syncing to a server in case someone needed access to the files and didn't have Drive set up, and then also backing up an image of said server to the NAS, and backing it all up to C2...

Was looking at RS422+ or DS923+ but now the 1522+ sounds like it might be the best bet....

No easy answers it seems.
