My perspective in all of this is not healthy for a number of reasons . . . Fed Credits will soon disappear and Fed taxes will take their place. We already pay the highest cost for pri. solar system purchase & installation . . . in the world.
1) It would seem to me that your ROI is not going to be what is promised or fair for the money you invested.
2) Today Panel Efficiency at best is only 20% and not going to get any better y time soon.Panels degrade and lose efficiency over time and if the panels do not track the sun then that alone means -30% of your 20% = 14%
3) Of the 50 states only 10% provide enough sun power to make it worth the gamble. )
4) Home Owners Ins.and *Fed. Taxes will Eventually catch up to those who have bypassed big oil.

Great video. I'm in Texas and I had no power from Sunday to Friday during the snow storm. It was 24 degrees in my apartment at one point. My wife are looking to go solar when we buy our house. Wondering what the total price is.

Only takes money!!
The reasons I didn’t use Tesla are #1 the use of outdated single inverter solar systems. Tesla cost vs equipment used was very expensive.

The current wall battery cycle life is a big enough concern that Tesla plays cycle use games with the batteries to ensure they don’t have large number of battery failures before the warranty is up. So ultimately cost of the wall needs to be re- evaluated on year 15 etc.

I fully support these technologies and put a 25yr manufacturer warranty micro inverter system on my home. Its awesome. As for our wild fire power cuts vs solar or power walls - the impact of smoke taking production to near zero for several days left most power wall owners in the dark by day 2-3. The average power wall install is around $30,000. I opted for a “Quiet Inverter generator” under 70 decibel for $830 with tax, added a manual cut off switch $950 to the house. 15 other neighbors all bought the same generator 3500watt and same manual cut off switch. Worked awesome!!! No complaints from any one. The generator we can hear 7 house’s away is a neighbor who bought a open frame 7500watt construction generator 100+ decibel, and ran extension cords through the house 🤦‍♂️. We as in the neighbors have since helped the neighbor get rid of the construction site monstrosity. Get the house setup with a cut off switch and a much cheaper, 1/2 as loud quiet inverter generator. This next season will be much better in our neighborhood regarding noise👍

If I was you, I would have reprogrammed the cars to not charge during grid off peak (overnight), but during your morning where you almost always had full sunshine. It would have likely allowed you to extend the off grid time by a couple of days. Well done though.👍🏼

I have long time friends who have lived, 14 years off grid. Lots of low watt panels and lead acid batteries. When a long wire was twice the cost of solar in 2006. Its a Australian country house, 4 sided verandahs, 4 bedrooms and big modcon kitchen.
New kit today the grid is looking no more than backup.

Basically just laptop, Internet, a bit of light, and charging small batteries. To do more I would need more solar panels.

Do solar panels generate more energy on a sunny hot day they do on a sunny cold day? In other words, would a sunny blue sky and 30° weather generate more or less Energy than a sunny blue sky at 100°?

I totally 100% agree with you that by charging the cars, via the powerwall it could depleat them, at a time when the powerwall would be needed the most,
also agree with the fact that there is no way that the battery system in the Tesla at the moment could be connected with the main house utility via the powerwall but am wondering why with all the technology that Tesla has with their system of going completely self sufficient, that they have no way of allowing the tesla vehicle to be used in such an emergency like being connected to the powerwall....

Take for instance the Kia EV6 this vehicle has a system built in called Vehicle to Load which could sustain energy to a house in the event of a power fail, and in the worse case scenario be able to provide power to a power wall I believe that having this feature built in to all Tesla vehicles would be a great asset to Tesla owners...something for thought. check out the yout tube videos for Kia EV6 for V2L (Vehicle to Load)

how come there are no videos of systems over 10yrs of people raving about how much money they are saving if solar has been around over 20yrs. i love how no one ever mentions having to replace most of the expensive components, and how most solar panel companies who guarantee their panels for 20yrs seem to go out of business after about 10 yrs. no one ever mentions how expensive it is to replace their roof and having to take the entire panel system down and set it all back up. i love how all those hidden costs never get mentioned. btw how much is a tesla power wall system. last i checked they cost over 11,000 each installed. and most systems require more than one.

Tornados leave people without homes. Won’t matter is you have a power wall. Solar can’t be used off grid without batteries. Myth. Solar panels by themselves can’t power your house.

Hi! I see this was a few years ago and you look like you have at least 4 powerwalls and presumably a pretty large solar setup. I've got 10.5kW and 2 powerwalls, and have not yet experienced an outage (though watched Storm Watch kick off numerous times!). I heard from a friend in North Cal that during weeks of fires and multiday power outages, their similar system didn't cut it and he needed a generator too. I have heard that fire smoke does seriously inhibit your ability to make solar but can't find a lot of empirical experience from people like you...did you happen to capture your system's behavior during the previous fire seasons? Or earlier this year when Canadian fire smoke was hitting us?
