This is so much more intense with the knowledge of how peaceful IP Man is. In the earlier fights he never hurt his opponent, merely played with them. He’s a completely calm and composed man. But when it came to this, watching his friends and family suffer and die, amusing their enemy like clowns in a circus, watching his friend die for food to feed his family, he stopped holding back. This was pure cruelty incarnate. He wanted them to hurt, wanted them to suffer. I know a criticism of group fight scenes is you can see everyone in the background just dancing around and not helping, but I see it as fear. They’re afraid to approach him the entire fight as they watch him effortlessly mutilate their allies. This wasn’t a fight, it was torturing the enemy
