It's a good thing this wasn't made as Tom Cruise has a habit of taking over a production and turning to focus only on himself so that the story gets lost. The movie becomes a Cruise vehicle and loses all contact with the original material. It would have been a total debacle.

Of course, with Del Toro it was already a debacle before Cruise was even added to the list. Cthulhu popping up as a jump scare at the end? Why don't you add some Blade vampires in there as well. Certainly the Demeter opening is really from the Call of Cthulhu so sure let's throw some King in Yellow in there as well. The problem is the Mountains of Madness were a deep psychological horror story. There was only one spot of actual action, the rest was suspense--which is what made it good. But, Del Toro has to turn everything into a Grindhouse style action story. It should have been done by Roman Polanski not Guillermo Del Toro.

Far be it from me to not allow that people can learn and change. It was a very good thing the plug was pulled on Del Toro's original AMOM vision. It was more horrifying than the thing Danforth saw beyond the mountains. Sill, the Shape of Water is closer in mood to what AMOM needed so maybe if he does in his old age it will be better--or maybe not. That thought leaves me with deep slimy nightmares.

It's a shame. If ANYONE can successfully bring Lovecraft to the screen, it's Guillermo del Toro.

Lovecraft Country is more about a message than a story. We get it, Lovecraft wasn't the greatest person...you showed him I guess. But we need a great At the Mountains of Madness movie that just tells an awesome story!

They need to do a faithful adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness and then do a sequel based on the novella, A Colder War, by Charles Stross. A Colder War is available online for free. A very good read.

I read that Del Toro wrote his version of At The Mountains of Madness taking place in the time of the Spanish Conquest of Mexico. I imagine those mountains being so different from every other one of Mexico’s mountains and so full of evil that no one, be it the Aztecs, Mayans, Spanish, or any other native Mexican tribe and kingdom, would have the gall to go near them.

I think it's his ego. Sometimes less is more, as Lovecraft proved. He doesn't need over 100 million to make a brilliant movie. And as for Prometheus? Why does one negate the other? Prometheus is it's own movie and really had very little likeness to at the mountains of madness. There have been some amazing go fund me Lovecraft movies made on a pittance. And in my opinion, Cruise would ruin the movie as he did to Anne Rice's Interview. If Del Toro can't make a brilliant movie on less than 100 million then he has lost his talent. Unless he's afraid of hitting that Lovecraft movie curse. It is extremely difficult to successfully convert his writings to film as proof of all the horrible attempts (who's Directors didn't care much). Maybe he's afraid to touch such a masterpiece that Lovecraft embodies. Since I believe he truly does care and love Lovecraft's body of work.

I love Del Toro films and will support whatever he puts out next :) But I hope he re-thinks using Tom Cruise after seeing how he ruined the Mummy reboot. Tom reportedly threatened to walk off the set if he didn't get his way over the vision of the director, leaving them rewriting much of the script to follow Tom as more of a hero and even changing the ending to make Tom all-powerful and victorious. But the changes broke the film, nothing made sense or worked well in the end.
I'm tired of seeing Tom Cruise in anything. Knowing he abandoned his daughter makes it hard for me to be willing to support his films at the box office. I think a film like this would be better with a lesser-known actor because we'd be more afraid he'll be killed off ;) Or even switch for a female lead since she'll seem physically vulnerable and distract fans of the original text so the film will be less predictable for them
