I Tried Replacing My MacBook with An iPad Again

I use the iPad more like a notebook/travel computer depending on the task, but I also regularly use it for marking up PDF files.

The problem with the ipad is IpadOS, it just doesnt do enough to be “pro”, its just a laptop lite, people who are on the fence, buy a MacBook instead.

My company uses lots of mobile based apps, so for me I think of my iPad of a way of turbocharging my phone. If you’re wanting a laptop style experience get a MacBook or a laptop. If, like me, you’re using apps more than software then an iPad can be a productivity beast. I wouldn’t change my iPad for anything else (except the newer iPad when it’s time to upgrade).

I'm considering selling my iPad 10 and Mac mini m1 to buy an iPad Pro and use it as daily simple pc use but the stage manager issues with external monitor bugged me off honestly.

Apple needs to put MacOS on iPads. Right now the ipad is just an expansive entertainment gadget, nothing more imo.

I tried to replace my iPad with a Macbook, i returned the Macbook after 7 days! It was awful! Although the incredibly stupid idea that iPads has to be thin, is destroying the iPad! The Pad need 20 hours battery time! Make it twice as thick!

I have a the iPad Pro 12.9 set up that you have with magic keyboard and pencil. It’s basically an expensive iPad set up because I never use it but I’m studying now so I plan to take it with me and see if I need to buy a MacBook Air. Honestly I will probably waste more money to buy a MacBook 😂.

For me the iPad is the best replacement for those shitty MacBooks.
MacBooks have so many strange issues that are exclusive to MacBooks only and never been seen on Windows or Linux alternatives.
For example, my MacBook Air got it's flex cable killed by dust. Apple Store said it was liquid damage but when I went to independent repair store, they said that there was dust in the connector and no liquid damage.
Even funnier, the keyboard on MacBooks is terrible ever since they released their 2016 line of laptops.
On the iPad I had way better experience so far even though I made the mistake and upgraded to the 2022 iPad and I'm currently limited in my apps by the amount of RAM but at least I was able to 3d print a docking station which allows me to turn the iPad into a Nintendo Switch and basically use external display for multi tasking.
I was also live streaming the second display on Twitch through a 3rd party app.
Also, the first party accessory are garbage for the iPad. I bought so many 3rd party accessories like Logitech keyboard, 3rd party Apple Pencil, 3rd party Lenovo ThinkPad dock which gives me Ethernet, DP output, storage card reader and display off button which is originally used for the power button on Lenovo laptops and also a 3.5mm Captain Jack who sings Soldier Soldier don't look down if I connect my Sony F535R Amplifier to it and turn on all my audiophile level components like the fiber optics transmitter for my audiophile grade speakers

In the end I can say that iPad is a MacBook replacement for me

What about if someone does the most basic stuff? School and social media? Can it work as a laptop?

I got into reading again and i love it on the iPad, i understand i can do this on my iphone and mac but i feel it’ll interest me more using a iPad. Would this be a good reason to buy an iPad?

I just bought a surface pro....it literally does everything....and doesn't have a jank OS that limits you.

This video does not explain why exactly an iPad can't replace a Mac. Yes typing and emailing can be done via phone as well, what's new in that? The most important thing is that on a MacBook, you can actually install software and run it freely whereas on an iPad, everything good is subscription-based.
And to be honest, I feel much better paying a one-time fee only rather than getting robbed until eternity for a software.

So technically its not a question of whether an iPad can replace MacBook, they're both almost equally powerful machines. The real conclusion is that iPad OS will never ever ever come close to Mac OS

what stops me to use an iPad as a laptop is VS Code, or any other good code editor with good extensions support. If VS Code can run on iPadOS, I think it will be okay for almost all developers to use it as a laptop. I saw some developers use chromebook as their mobile tool due to the support of VS Code.

I really don't know what's the point of buying a tablet and trying to convert it into a laptop.... feels and looks clunky with all those add-ons ...

Just got the M2 iPad Air 15”, but im having second thoughts, I love it and its doing everything great but I’m realizing now is back in high school we used iPads, and freshmen year we all got the newest iPad but by senior year it was old and out dated. But my old Mac that got replaced by this iPad has been working everyday and it’s a 2015 Mac air. It is a computer, like your phone is a computer, it's just not a laptop or desktop because they don't want it to be really. That segment is for macbooks still. Putting macos on there, or merging them, would cost them currently from people sllitting between multiple devices.

You will pay the same price overall. You get all of the same components if you are using the stand.

I prefer my MacBook, the iPad did everything I need but I prefer the MacBook keyboard and battery life.the Magic Keyboard for the 11 inch is very cramped and I don't like the 13 inch iPad in tablet mode. for work the MacBook is my preference but I want an iPad mini or maybe a cheap pro for around the house. Both great options!

I have an iPhone, Mac, and windows PC. I feel like if I get an iPad it won’t really be helpful and would just be a bigger iPhone to me.

To be fair, ipad felt more like a separate device than how my tab and galaxy felt. Tab literally felt like an enlarged version of my galaxy

I tried for years to use my iPad as laptop replacement, particularly when traveling, but I always found myself grateful to be back on my Mac when I got home. The iPad is a cool piece of tech for sure, but after many years and several hundreds of dollars spent on various versions of the iPad, I’ve come to the conclusion that there really isn’t justifiable use case for it *for me*. Interestingly, I’m starting to feel the same way about my Watch — it’s cool, but do I really need one? Probably not. Going forward I think I’ll be getting by with just a Mac and an iPhone…and saving myself thousands of dollars as a consequence.
