My sister had a Chevette in the 70s. Not a bad car for its day. That front attracted terrible stone chips. Looked like smallpox.

And yes they do even check that expensive clunk is going to appear just after the warranty runs out .
It was quite appropriate that Shaw Taylor of police 5 did this as selling these cars was a crime in itself.

These cars were some of the worst crap boxes ever produced, both the U.K. and U.S. markets. Listening to this dude talk it up like it's some masterfully built piece of precision machinery is laughable. (The Chevettes that is)

...and just like Liz and Dick's second marriage, the parts divorced in about 20 minutes. If you think these cars fell apart in the UK, you should have seen what happened to them where I am (eastern Ontario) when they were exposed to road salt (and winter, period). They had holes you could throw a cat through, and were undriveable in as little as 2 years, if a Fury or BelAir didn't take them out first. The dealers left buyers twisting in the wind. There was one standout, called Firenza, sold here in the early 70's, some kind of Vauxhall I believe...there were demonstrations in front of parliament where owners decorated those cars with lemons, they were worthless right off the lot.

Back in the mid nineties I bought a chevette saloon as a runabout for the Mrs. She wasn't exactly over the moon about it but that little car just kept on going. Hardly had to touch it while we had it. It took a load of abuse but in the end it was rust that killed it. Say what you want about them but they were tough little cars.

I recall going on a group works visit to Vauxhall at Luton when the Chevette was in production , a model we were told they were justly proud of with quality issues generally sorted. The entire production line as far as the eye could be see were all gold in colour with the exception of one in red some distance away.Asking the guide how come a red car had intervened amongst this large output of gold Chevettes , he looked ruefully for a moment and said ' " Gawd knows ", always remember that !.I think it has aged well, a cute and neat little car.

Like a lot of other 70s small British car's the Chevette was prone to starting problems because of the point's and condenser fitted in the distributor which never got replaced until it didn't start at all. Then you had to set the gap right. Thank goodness for electronic ignition , it was the best invention ever.

I didn't know the 'Shovvett' was rear wheel drive.
I remember a local copper I once knew said he had tried to chase a speeding escort mk3 in a police Shovvet, this police car, no flashing lights because it was a village beat car, couldn't keep up and lost the car 😂😂😂
