Sou's Success Tip for Today: How To Interest People

The secret to getting people interested in you is to start off by being interested in them. What I mean by that is when you start your conversation, find something that you are genuinely interested in about them OR find out what they are interested in and get them talking about that.

Before you start talking about yourself (which we all tend to do), find a topic that you know they are interested in, and passionate about, and allow them to talk about it and tell you more about it.

Listen intently with genuine interest while they speak. When you do this, they can't help but be more receptive to what you have to say. It all comes back to the concept of reciprocity. When you pay attention to someone intentionally and with genuine interest, they will feel a desire to pay you back in the same fashion.

In sales, this method is called building rapport. If you've ever had a salesperson come to your house for an appointment, good chances are that he or she will start off the conversation by complimenting your home (if it is nice and neat) and get your comfortable with them. Another way to put it is breaking the ice.

This whole concept of "Getting someone to talk about themselves" can be applied to any type of interaction (business or personal).

I think the main reason why this works so well is because we, as humans, have an innate desire to feel important. And by talking about ourselves, we get to feel important. Especially when we know the other person is genuinely interested in what we are saying.
