A quote about the dormition from Saint Dimitri of Rostov: I will ask you today, who is it whose Dormition we are commemorating? I know that each, according to his zeal towards the Deceased, will answer with all kinds of laudatory words. Some may say, “The Mother of God has passed away to her Son and God” or, “The living heavens is ascending”; others will say, “The impassable gates are carried to the heavenly doors” or, “The Sun, in which the Most High has dwelt, is risen from the earth into heaven”; still others might say, “The most pure and most honourable Dwelling of God has been taken to churches not made by hands”. Everyone will say something laudative according to their piety. But I will address Our Supremely Pure Lady Theotokos and ask, “Who are You, lying here?” In response I hear a humble voice: “Here am I, the servant of the Lord!” (Luke 1:38) Now let everyone know that it is the Servant of the Lord Who has passed away and was laid in the tomb today. “Behold, I am the Servant of the Lord!” I will recall one more ancient saying, “Serving God means co-reigning with Him”. A true servant of God is at the same time the heir of the heavenly kingdom, co-reigning with Christ. Because the Most Pure Virgin is truly the Servant of the Lord, She must therefore be called the Queen of all visible and invisible creation.

I am always brought to tears when I see Christ holding His Mother's soul in this icon. The beauty of that moment and the promise for our own souls takes my breath away.

Lovely, thank you. I wonder if you might be planning to cover the icon of the protection of the most holy Theotokos? Yesterday I finally realised that the fades icon on the front of the wooden baptismal cross my Greek Godmother gave me is this icon. I had thought it was Mary crossing her arms and holding hands with people but could never find it. Yesterday I looked again and prayed to find it and then I saw she was actually holding a cloth, which did turn up the right answer. I want to see can anyone restore it and the crucifixion on the other side.

This really changed my whole perspective on the icon, wow. I went to Dormition great vespers today but I was like "mehh i wont go to divine liturgy tomorrow" but hearing you say that this is why we SHOULD go to liturgy, i might go! Love your videos

I am currently learning about Orthodoxy and trying to convince my wife that we should convert from our Protestant church.

In the Philippines, we have a book called "Pasyong Mahal," an 18th century "epic" poem recounting the Passion narrative of Jesus. It is still read by Roman Catholics in the provinces during the Holy Week.
What I find interesting about it is that it also contains the story of Mary's assumption into heaven. However, the Pasyong Mahal's depiction is closer, if not consistent, to the Orthodox "Dormition" instead of the Catholic "Assumption." Mary died, was buried, and was later assumed into heaven after 40 days. It also contains the Doubting Thomas episode as discussed in the video.

Among all this divine theology that we can see on this icon really like the fact that Christ took His mother’s soul to the Heaven!
As we know Archangel Michael takes our souls and drives them to the Lord but Christ honoured His mother and came down Himself to take her pure soul!
During my latest pilgrimage to Jerusalem some months ago, it was the first time that I payed attention and realised I should say that in the church at Gethsemane where the Tomb of Theotokos is there isn’t any Papal Latin chapel…
Everywhere in the Holy Lands, where we have our Orthodox Churches built by St. Helena or later, there are always later additions like Armenian and Papal Latin chapels right next to ours!
But inside the tomb of Theotokos there is our right on top of the gravestone, and 1-2 metres away the Armenian chapel.
There’s isn’t any Papal chapel…
It’s a bit stupid to say that but, that was when I realised that for God’s sake, these people truly don’t believe that Maria was died…
There were no Roman Latins at the tomb of Gethsemane (Armenians were also absent) which at the end was nice because we had a peaceful atmosphere there and we prayed and honoured her in our Orthodoxy way, how she deserves it!
